Quick ‘n Dirty Review: Wet (Xbox 360)
In an attempt to get more content on my blog (it's starving, the poor little guy!), I'm going to try and do brief reviews for games I'm playing to supplement the other random junk that finds its way here. Hence, the quick 'n dirty review. In this edition, I'll be talking about Artificial Mind and Movement's Wet.
Wet is an unashamed, low-brow shooter that keeps things at a breakneck pace and doesn't ever derail. The story is pretty forgettable and Rubi Malone, who's a kind of gun for hire, is the lead in this Grindhouse-inspired title. There's little-to-no character development, but the game never forgets where the fun is: action. Thus, it's nothing more than a series of stages where you encounter groups of enemies and kill them in stylish, slow-mo splendor.
In a lot of ways, it feels like the natural evolution of the Max Payne series, just with some swordplay and a more acrobatic protagonist. Around 95% of the time though, I was diving back and forth in slow-mo, split-targeting and shooting dudes' faces off and having a blast doing it.
Highs
- Incredibly fun to play, from start to finish
- Highway stages feature intense combat and spectacular set pieces
- Dual-wielding and dual-targeting is simple and effective
- Game leans heavily on the slow-mo, but it never gets monotonous or tiring
Lows
- QTE boss fights are annoying (I want to fight them myself!)
- The game is VERY short
- Little to no replay value outside of the campaign (there's a points-based mode to play after the campaign, but it's not much)
- Eliza Dushku's voicework doesn't add much value or life to Rubi

I was surprised at how enjoyable this game was. Kinda expected it to be the next X-Blades, but it ended up being pretty fantastic. Got a bit addicted to Gold medaling the challenges, as well…
