Left 4 Mario: A Must-Play Left 4 Dead 2 Mod
This weekend, I spent some time getting reacquainted with my PC (blame the crazy Steam sales) and, more specifically, Left 4 Dead 2. After tearing through The Passing and The Sacrifice, me and a few friends decided to check out some custom campaign mods and stumbled upon Left 4 Mario, a very odd fanservice that is quite fun.
It's not just 8-bit-themed scenery for Left 4 Dead 2 -- Left 4 Mario makes several nods towards Nintendo's flagship franchise, from climbing up flagpoles for bonuses (instead of bonus points, you get a health pack) to a lava-filled section resembling Koopa's castle. Even the campaign's opening screen is a fun little nod to the classic platformer.
The only issue I have with it is that there are plenty of places to fall down and either die or annoy your teammates, who will have to help you up. But the platforming makes sense, so I can't fault it too much.
I just wish Mario survived. Seeing him dead beneath a mess of green pipes somehow wasn't how I pictured it ending for him. Zombie apocalypses will do that, I guess.
