David Hinkle doing stand-up comedy

I love comedy. I love to laugh. My entire life, I've been making people laugh. In high school, I was class clown. When I was younger, it was the same thing.

Stand-up comedy is the most pure form of comedy on the planet. It's not collaborative -- though it can be, and I should say friends have given me valuable pointers since I've started this -- and it's just me and my opinions, relayed to people. Comedy is universal, but not all senses of humor are. My initial goal when starting this was validating my humor to myself. "No, you're not crazy. You know what's funny," I told myself prior to my first set.

But having just completed my third set, I know that I was born for this. The validation came, and it came in massive waves from strangers and friends alike. Each time I do it, I get more comfortable on stage and I get far more agile. I even riffed on hecklers this time around.

Anyway, I just wanted to post my videos here for convenience and chat a bit about why I'm doing this. I don't want to be famous; I don't want to be rich. I have no ego (not to be confused with having no self-confidence or esteem) and I'm not doing this as "therapy," like so many of the female comedians I've seen here in SF are -- I don't mean to generalize, but it's pretty surprising how many of them do it for that reason. I'm doing this because I love to laugh, I love a deadline forcing me to be creative and, most importantly, because I want to make you laugh. We should all laugh as much as possible and settle for nothing less.

Oh, and if you're wondering, yes: the Steve Jobs joke was entirely appropriate. Comedy has no boundaries.
