I am a Victim of Identity Theft

idtheftdpEarlier this week, I got a call from my bank about some curious charges on my Visa check card. I'm usually on top of my bank accounts, but I haven't peeked at my checking account online for about a month, so I called the bank back and they claimed someone in California was running up charges with my check card. Seeing as how the thing never escapes my wallet, I was pretty much stumped as to how this could happen.

The individual running amok with my card must've gotten the info during my week at E3 this year -- the first week of June -- and sat on it for a few months. Regardless of how this person got the info, they've racked up over $500 in goods at various retailers since Black Friday.

At first, it seemed like there was very little that could be done, save for my bank shutting down the card and crediting the money back to my account. However, I got in touch with my local police department and they were able to discern exact times at some of these locations -- retailers which had security cameras.

So my next step is to take this info and call the CA police departments where the offenses took place. Hopefully this person is caught, but take this as a warning to be extra safe with your check/credit cards. I used to use my check card all the time and rarely took out cash. I'm certainly reconsidering that convenience going forward.

E3 2009: Score 1 for swine flu

e3logodp

I may be overreacting (Probably. Definitely.), but I did get pretty sick (so far, I've been sick for exactly 1 week) during the week of E3. Despite that, I still managed to kick ass and wrote more posts than everyone else at Joystiq. They may have been Nyquil-fueled and incredibly, uh, crazy, but a post is a post, dammit. In your faces, talented coworkers of mine!

If you need to catch up on anything, follow this handy link. Oh, and before you ask, yes, Scribblenauts is the real deal. Promise.

So, this E3 2009 business …

e3convention

You may have noticed a severe lack in content here lately, and it's mostly due to E3 stuff. The show is returning to form this year, and Joystiq has been kicking ass in planning what we're all going to see, and cover, at this year's show. I'm pretty busy with that because, uh, it's my job, so you're likely to see my personal site here take a backseat for a short period.

I'm going to try and get things up here as I can (I'd like to do daily recaps from my own perspective, and not just links to stuff I wrote on Joystiq, but we'll see how that pans out), but don't expect a lot over the next 2 or 3 weeks. I suggest you instead follow me on Twitter (@DaveHinkle), as I'll be on there like crazy during the show.
