David Hinkle doing stand-up comedy
I love comedy. I love to laugh. My entire life, I've been making people laugh. In high school, I was class clown. When I was younger, it was the same thing.
On a stand-up kick lately

I've been listening to a lot of stand-up comedy lately, mainly as background noise for when I'm working. I talk to other people in my profession and they say they need silence to concentrate and can't even write with the TV on, but, man, I hate silence. Why put up with silence when you can listen to music? Or the TV? Or in my case, stand-up comedy?
So, some of the great acts I've been spinning in my harddrive while writing have been:
- Nick Swardson's "Party"
- Jim Norton's "Monster Rain"
- Michael Ian Black's "I am a Wonderful Man"
- Jim Gaffigan's "King Baby"
Any suggestions for me?
Louis C.K. kicks off my current stand-up fascination
I've had this stint of stand-up in my life, courtesy of the great comedian Louis C.K. Have you ever seen his stuff? Well, it started with me Netflixing Lucky Louie, his season-long HBO series that was damn hilarious and, like most things that are good, got canceled. After plowing through those episodes, I watched his stand-up special Shameless again, followed by his shorter HBO One Night Stand gig. After that, I just kept craving stand-up, so I watched Eddie Murphy's Raw, Jim Norton's Monster Rain and topped it off this morning with Doug Stanhope's No Refunds.
I love stand-up because it's something I can easily put on in the background while I work. I hate working in silence, because the key tapping becomes deafening in my ear and I start feeling like a postal worker that just wants to Uzi the whole damn block. So it's nice to have something on while I blog. Stand-up is perfect for that.
On top of that, I've been having a stand-up kick because comedic films nowadays suck big time. I haven't seen a really funny movie recently (aside from Step Brothers). Where are our equivalents to Caddyshack, Animal House and Trading Places? Is Superbad it? It seems like all we get is Dane Cook.
I hate Dane Cook.
